Welcome Flint earth side.   He was such a sweet newborn.  His parents love Indian Jones so i tried to incorporate a brown hat into a few of the images.   Flint was so handsome.

Newborn Maria along with big sister Bella.  I did Bella’s newborn pictures and was thrilled to take her baby sisters! Maria’s mom loves purple! I do to, so it was easy to work it in her session. Bella was so very proud of her little sister. Can you see it in her eyes? Speaking of eyes aren’t Bella’s amazing? I think she is going to take extra special care of her! I hope you enjoy this beautiful session. It really was a fun one for me!

She was chalk full of smiles and proud of her new skill. I think you will see in her images! These sessions are short and sweet and we get an amazing variety of pictures from them. “Enjoy the little things in life, Because one day you will look back And realize they were the big things.”

Newborn sessions hold a special place in our heart. The ridiculous amount of love and happiness that fills the home always brings back a flood of memories of our own special time. There’s nothing more exciting than a brand new bundle of joy, and despite the lack of sleep and endless diaper changes, everyone is in awe of this sweet little bundle of joy.

Planning for your family portraits| Jacki G. Photography| Richmond, VA | Family & Newborn Photographer

Planning for your family photography session can seem overwhelming. There are so many factors that can influence your end result and are worth consideration prior to your shoot. And while your family photographer can remain fluid and flexible with respect to timing and location, and session structure, it is helpful if you – the client – considers your goals and planning points.

Your family photography session should be relaxed and fun, but keep in mind that it is an investment, and an important one that perhaps you’ve been saving for. With a little bit of extra thought and planning, you can be assured you are more than satisfied (and perhaps a little amazed!) with the final results!

When planning your family photography session, think about these 4 key “W” questions:
1. When (time of year),
2. Where (beach, city, park, meadow, home),
3. What time (time of day)
4. What to wear (casual, traditional, preppy, trendy, etc.)

And while you nail down those basic planning elements, take a step back and think about what you will DO with your images. Do you plan to:
• Create a keepsake album or coffee table book?
• Display images on your walls, and if so, to what size… will they be framed or canvases?
• Give gift prints?
• Share the images online and use in your personal photobooks and slideshows?

Once you’ve thought through those items, you will want to consider your family’s personality, your style, and the decor of your home.
• What type of family are you (sporty, preppy, beachy, traditional, casual)?
• Which room(s) are you most likely to display your images (foyer, family room, hallway/staircase, living room, bedroom)?
• What is the style, decor and color of that area (warm, cool, formal, modern, beachy, cottage, traditional)?

Next, describe your dream images – if you could have 5 images come out of your session, what would they look like?

Armed with these answers, regroup with your photographer and communicate your vision. Together you can come up with a game plan that will ensure you are on the same page and allow your photographer to deliver the type of images you have always dreamed of having for your home. Additionally, once you view your gallery, you are not arbitrarily looking at images, but instead selecting them with your specific goals in mind.

To make sense of this, consider viewing a gallery in two scenarios:

1. Without Family Photography Session Planning: “Huh, well, I like the family ones, but they are cropped tight and you can’t see the landscape and I think it will look funny over the beach house fireplace… plus, our winter, formal clothes don’t match the beachy decor.”

2. With Session Planning: ”Awesome, this is exactly what we wanted for the focal point wall gallery in the family room. I love it! The beach backdrop, the colors and our outfits are exactly what I had in mind when I thought of a story-telling canvas collection for above the fireplace.”

Remember, it’s your family photography session. You probably don’t have time (or energy) to repeat it at this exact stage in your life, so make sure that you stack the deck in your favor the first time! Your planning, preparation and communication will surely pay off and you will have personal art in your home that makes you smile every day, for years and years to come. Isn’t that what custom photography is all about? We think so.

Toddlers are messy. They’re chaotic. They’re perpetually sticky.
But, regardless of the craziness, a single smile or giggle makes it all worthwhile.
They have the uncanny power to melt your heart, and there truly is no greater joy.
As parents ourselves of three little bundles of energy, we love to embrace the genuine moments of your family having fun and enjoying yourself.  There are the images that bring happiness for so many years to come.  I photographed Alex as a baby and look how big he has gotten at about 18 months old he was into everything, :)

Selecting a Newborn Photographer| Jacki G. Photography| Family & Newborn Photography| Richmond, VA

We found this article on NewbornPhotography.com, and thought it would be helpful to share with our readers. It provides very helpful recommendations for choosing the right newborn photographer for your family. Hope you enjoy!!

Congratulations! Expecting a child is undoubtedly the most exciting time in your life and you must have a million questions about newborn photography; what it is, how to hire a newborn photographer, where to find one, and what to look for. Well, this is the place for you! Lets start by highlighting a few questions that you might want to ask your potential newborn photographers, in hopes of narrowing down someone that is right for you!

1. Portfolio
Ask to see their portfolio, or just take some time and go through their website. Every newborn photographer has a different style and vision. Photography is a very personal experience, and regardless of trends or what is in ‘style’ make sure that you choose a photographer that’s right for you. Choose a newborn photographer whose work you can’t live without – that pulls on your heart strings, and speaks to you. This is a moment in time that you will never be able to get back – so take your time, find the photography style that you love, as these photographs will become a part of your family history for generations.

2. Testimonials & References
Once you have narrowed down your choices, why not ask for testimonials or references? As well as being a skilled photographer, the individual photographing your newborn will also be a caregiver for your infant during the 2-4 hour session, posing, soothing, and handling the most important and fragile person in your life.

3. Experience
Ask how long they have been in business, and what education they have. An experienced newborn photographer will know all of the industry secrets about posing, soothing and most importantly safety for your newborn. There are many workshops and newborn photography courses that are available for photographers that cover topics like safety and comfort of your child during the session – why not ask where they learned their skills from? This is an important question, and will help you decide if they are right fit for you.

4. Investment
This is the last thing we mention, for a reason. The investment of a newborn session differs from photographer to photographer, and where you live. Although cost is a factor and rightfully so, try not to make it the only factor.

These photographs will be in your family for generations, they will be shown again in 30 years time at your child’s wedding, then resurface when your child is expecting their own baby. When you hold these photographs in 35-40 years time, you will close your eyes and be able to recall everything about your child when they were newborns – their baby ‘smell’, the warmth of their bodies, their little fingers and toes. These photographs will not only serve as documentation – they will serve as food for your soul. Although cost is a factor, it shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Choose a professional newborn photographer that will provide you with stunning images that you can’t live without.

Despite the cold weather at the end of March,  this little baby was all smiles and giggles for her photo shoot. Looking at her parents, it’s not hard to see where she gets her awesome personality. Thanks for such a fun-filled shoot!!  Midlothain mines was the perfect location for this milestone session.  The trees were just starting to bloom and make for a great backdrop.

We love capturing our newborn clients as they grow bigger in size… and personality! Always bittersweet when a baby's first year client comes to the end of one year session.  I've loved watching Maddie's personality grow.   One-year olds are such fun to photograph!  I prefer the outdoors setting for this age, as it offers plenty of room for them to crawl and toddle around.  Letting them to play naturally and explore their environment makes for great shots.
